NICK CAVE SOUNDSUITS

i am in love with nick cave's soundsuits. although originally created as sculptures, cave's soundsuits don't just hang in a gallery or sit on display in a home. these innovative works of art are surprisingly functional: cave discovered these gorgeous textile creatures make noise when worn and create the most incredible dance costumes. not only do they make rhythmic noises when worn, they also transform the dancer into a magical being without body type, race or gender to be judged by. the audience simply sees this beautiful, colorful, intricate thing that captivates both eyes and ears.

how fun would it be to live in a world inhabited by people dressed in soundsuits? there would be no racism, sexism, size-ism .. people would only be seen for the beauty, movement and ingenuity of their soundsuit. plus i imagine people breaking into dance anywhere and everywhere which is a big dream of mine. that and people breaking into song randomly like they do in musicals. sigh.

the big, fluffy ones - especially when paired with masks and colorful 'fro wigs - remind me of muzzy or tommy the clown (the father of krump and the hip hop clowns). the colors of the sound suits (& shapes of some) also really remind me of grizzly bear's "ready, able" music video. grizzly bear's eerie, poetic vocals go perfectly with the gorgeously spooky, clowny clay figures created by the brilliant allison shulnik.
